Naturopathic Medicine: Working With Your Body, Not Against It

What Is Naturopathic Medicine?
Let me keep this simple.
Naturopathic medicine isn’t just one therapy — it’s a way of looking at health.
It blends:
Natural approaches
Modern understanding of the body
But more importantly, it focuses on you as a whole person — not just a symptom or a diagnosis.
When I work with clients, I’m not just asking: “What’s wrong?”
I’m asking: “Why is this happening — and what is your body trying to do?”
The Healing Power Is Already Inside You
There’s a principle in naturopathic medicine called:
Vis Medicatrix Naturae — the healing power of nature
What that really means is this:
Your body already knows how to heal.
My job isn’t to “fix” you —It’s to:
Remove what’s getting in the way
Support your body
Help it do what it’s designed to do
Your body is constantly trying to bring itself back into balance — what we call homeostasis.
Two Ways of Looking at Health
The natural (vitalistic) view:
Your body is intelligent
It adapts, responds, and heals
Symptoms often have a purpose
The conventional (mechanistic) view:
The body is like a machine
Something breaks → fix or replace it
Symptoms are something to remove
The truth?
Both have their place.
If you break your leg — you need a hospital.
But if you’ve got long-term fatigue, gut issues, stress, or inflammation…
That’s where working with your body becomes powerful.
What Causes Health Problems?
From a naturopathic point of view, issues don’t just appear out of nowhere.
They build up over time through things like:
Diet
Stress
Poor sleep
Toxins
Lifestyle habits
And here’s the key bit most people miss:
Symptoms aren’t the problem — they’re signals.
Rethinking Symptoms
We’ve been taught to see symptoms as the enemy.
But what if they’re actually your body trying to help you?
Fever → fighting infection
Inflammation → repairing tissue
Fatigue → forcing you to rest
Instead of asking: “How do I get rid of this?”
Try asking: “What is my body trying to tell me?”
Healing vs Quick Fixes
This is where things get really important.
Healing
The body restores itself
You actually get healthier
Relief (palliation)
Symptoms improve temporarily
Root cause still there
Suppression
Symptoms disappear
But the underlying issue can go deeper
I’ve seen it plenty of times:Skin issues suppressed → later turns into something deeper like breathing problems.
The Healing Process (What Most People Don’t Expect)
Healing isn’t always smooth.
Sometimes:
Symptoms flare up
You feel worse before better
This is often your body finally doing the work it couldn’t do before.
Not always — but it can be part of the process.
The Principles I Work By
Everything I do is built around:
Supporting the body’s natural healing
Doing no harm
Finding the root cause
Treating you as a whole person
Helping you understand your body
Preventing problems long-term
Lifestyle Is Everything
This is where most of the magic happens.
Real health comes from:
Proper, whole foods
Movement and rest
Managing stress
Good relationships
Having purpose
Reducing toxins
This isn’t an “add-on” — this is the foundation.
What I Actually Use With Clients
Depending on the person, I might use:
Nutrition changes
Herbal support
Lifestyle coaching
Stress and mindset work (ACT, meditation)
Simple natural therapies
It’s always tailored — no one-size-fits-all
It’s Not Either/Or
This isn’t about rejecting conventional medicine.
It’s about using the right tool at the right time.
Acute issues → conventional medicine is brilliant
Chronic issues → lifestyle and natural approaches often win
The best approach is usually a mix of both.
My Role
I’m not here to “fix” you.
I’m here to:
Help you understand what’s going on
Guide you
Support your body
So you can take control of your own health.
The Big Message
Your body is not broken.
It’s trying to help you.
When you start working with it instead of fighting it…
That’s when things start to change.
Final Thought
Next time you feel a symptom…
Instead of shutting it down straight away…
Just ask:
“What is my body trying to do here?”
