SIBO: The Hidden Cause of Bloating, IBS, and Brain Fog (And How to Fix It Naturally)

What is SIBO?

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is one of the most overlooked causes of digestive issues I see in clinic.

In simple terms — it’s when bacteria that should live in the large intestine start growing in the small intestine.

That might not sound like a big deal… but it completely disrupts digestion.

Instead of properly breaking food down, these bacteria ferment it too early — producing gas, irritation, and inflammation.

According to clinical data, SIBO is thought to be responsible for up to 60–70% of IBS cases

Common Symptoms of SIBO

SIBO doesn’t just affect your gut — it can impact your whole body.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Bloating (often within 20–30 minutes of eating)

  • Excess gas and burping

  • Constipation or diarrhoea

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

  • Nutrient deficiencies

Many people also notice they react badly to foods that are normally healthy — especially fibre.

Why SIBO Happens

SIBO isn’t random — there’s always a reason behind it.

From a naturopathic perspective, some of the biggest drivers are:

  • Low stomach acid – reduces your natural defence against bacteria

  • Chronic stress – slows digestion and gut motility

  • Antibiotic use – disrupts gut balance

  • Food poisoning – can damage gut nerve function

  • Poor gut motility (MMC dysfunction) – bacteria aren’t cleared properly

One of the most important things to understand is this:

Your gut has a “cleaning wave” (MMC) that sweeps bacteria out.If that slows down… bacteria build up.

The Different Types of SIBO

Not all SIBO is the same:

  • Hydrogen-dominant SIBO → more diarrhoea

  • Methane-dominant SIBO → more constipation

This is why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work.

How to Fix SIBO (The Mindfuel Approach)

This is where most people go wrong — they try one thing and hope it works.

SIBO needs a structured plan.

1. Remove the fuel (Diet)

The aim is simple:

Feed yourself… starve the bacteria

  • Low FODMAP approach

  • Reduce fermentable carbs

  • Short-term strategy (not forever)

2. Reduce the overgrowth

This can involve:

  • Herbal antimicrobials (e.g. oregano, berberine, allicin)

  • Targeted protocols depending on the type of SIBO

3. Support digestion

If digestion is weak, SIBO comes back.

Focus on:

  • Stomach acid support

  • Digestive enzymes

  • Bile flow

4. Restore gut movement

This is one of the most important steps.

  • Space meals (no constant snacking)

  • Support the migrating motor complex

  • Consider gentle prokinetics (e.g. ginger)

5. Repair and rebalance

Once the overgrowth is reduced:

  • Rebuild the gut lining

  • Reintroduce beneficial bacteria carefully

  • Address stress (this is huge)

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been struggling with bloating, IBS, or unexplained digestive issues…

SIBO could be the missing piece.

The key is not just treating symptoms — but understanding why your gut environment has changed in the first place.
